Anant Ambani, the youngest son of India’s richest couple, Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, got married to Radhika Merchant in a series of events that went around for five months. It began in March 2024 in Jamnagar, Anant and Radhika’s dream-land, a wildlife sanctuary spread across 3,000 acres. The celebrations moved to across Europe in mid-summer where the family and their friends hopped on a cruise sailing through the choicest destinations. The celebrations finally commenced (if at all they have) in Mumbai last weekend, with a grand wedding and multiple receptions.
Not just for Radhika-Anant and their families, but the wedding appeared like a never-ending festival for all Indians, and those on social media all across the world. It had everything – the ostentatious display of wealth, the Indian cultural dream, family bonding and many, many celebrities participating, putting their best fashion foot forward.
Anant’s individual net worth is around $40 billion and the celebrations cost around $600 million. This is just a rough estimate and the actual cost may just be way higher, from the look of the kind of jewellery that the Ambani ladies wore at these events. There was no emerald too big or no diamond too sparkly for the women who let gold and silver be a part of all of their intricately woven dresses.
Manish Malhotra, Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla, Tarun Tahiliani, Anamika Khanna and Sabyasachi were a few top designers who were charged with the responsibility of dressing up India’s wealthiest women during the wedding festivities. So, when international celebrities – Rihanna and Kim Kardashian-Khloe Kardashina, made their maiden visit to India to especially attend the grand wedding, they were also assisted by the same designers.
Kim’s red gown by Manish Malhotra and a dusty peach one by Tarun Tahiliani, boasted of crystals and silver thread-work. Even with the many celebs in attendance, the focus never went away from the bride and the groom. For each of his wedding outings, Anant wore an exclusive piece of a statement animal brooch – crafted with rubies, diamonds and gold – that he got pinned on his equally embellished and jewelled sherwanis.
The idea was to have the wedding of the century. To throw the kind of celebration the world has never seen before, and will not see in a very long time. The Ambanis definitely outdid themselves and so did the entire nation.
