The much-awaited film “Babli”, based on the popular novel by Buddhadeb Guha, was released on Independence Day, August 15, 2024. Starring Abir Chatterjee and Subhashree Ganguly, the film was expected to be a big hit, bringing a fresh pairing to the screen and capturing the audience with its engaging storyline. Directed by Raj Chakraborty, Babli follows the life of a young woman and her complicated relationships, making it a highly anticipated film in Tollywood.
However, the excitement surrounding the movie’s release has been overshadowed by a tragic event that has shaken the city of Kolkata. The horrific incident involving Dr. Moumita Debnath has led to widespread protests across the city. Thousands of women, men, and children have taken to the streets, demanding justice for her. This heartbreaking event has darkened the Independence Day celebrations, turning the city’s focus to ensuring justice is served.
In response to the ongoing protests, the team behind Babli made a significant decision. Actor Abir Chatterjee shared on Instagram that the special screening of the film, which was planned for August 16, has been canceled.
Abir stated, “Team Babli had already canceled promotional events in the last few days as we felt that was the appropriate thing to do… We feel it is our responsibility to pause any celebratory event, and that is why we have decided to call off the film’s special screening.”
