Due to their collaboration on the films Mela (2000) and Raj Hindustani (1996), Dharmesh Darshan and Aamir Khan are well-known. Many people are unaware, though, of the wonderful friendship that Dharmesh and Shah Rukh Khan share. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, the gifted and articulate director discussed it.
“There was one movie that Karim Morani wanted to make in 2004, starring Shah Rukh Khan,” Dharmesh Darshan stated. I had received them from SRK. I was occupied with Bewafaa (2005), thus I was unable to complete it. One of the partners at Cineyug, the production company behind Raja Hindustani, was Karim Morani.
Dharmesh went on, “Shah Rukh was very kind.” After Asoka (2001), he himself offered me a movie under his in-house production company, Red Chillies Entertainment. At two in the morning in 2002, something occurred at Aditya Chopra’s home. He deserves every bit of achievement since he is the most sincere and imaginative person. It’s the most generous movie star I’ve ever seen. He is a true star and an actor, similar to Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, and he also has class. “I had to turn down two offers from him,” Dharmesh Darshan continued. “Come on, Dharmesh, don’t follow your rule of working on one movie at a time,” he said.
Any star may become offended if he offers a filmmaker a movie and receives a “No” in return. He is an exception, though.
“I met him at the premiere of Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012),” he added. After my father’s death, I hadn’t attended any movie events, but I went to the premiere when Aditya Chopra personally called and asked me to. I’ve never seen a better premiere. Shah Rukh questioned me, “Why did a director like you stop making films?” when we met there. I don’t think so. He was rushing around and interacting with everyone at the event, which kept him busy. But as he usually has, he met me and showed me true respect. The fact that I couldn’t make the movies for him didn’t bother him. However, I suppose it’s my loss.
