Disney is set to follow up on its live-action trend with a remake of the popular 2010 animated film Tangled. Michael Gracey, who directed The Greatest Showman, is reportedly in talks to direct the film, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has written the screenplay. The remake will retell the classic animated version and bring fresh visuals and creative storytelling to Rapunzel’s journey from the tower.
The first Tangled was a turning point in the history of Disney as it was its 50th animated feature and the first to make full use of computer-generated animation. The movie had an amazing storyline, revolving around Rapunzel and her handsome love interest Flynn Rider, full of comedy, action, and tender moments, making it a classic movie instantly. It collected nearly $600 million worldwide and was appreciated for its lovable characters, creative animation, and unforgettable music, especially the song “I See the Light,” nominated for an Oscar.
This live-action film hopes to further Tangled’s legacy while offering something fresh to the cinema world for its viewers. With experience working on visually beautiful, music-driven stories, Gracey is well-suited for this project. The cast, as well as a release date, has not been announced, but speculation is already heating up as to who might sport Rapunzel’s golden locks and Flynn’s boots.
Disney’s live-action remakes have had mixed reactions over the years, from box office smash hits like The Lion King to not-so-great performances by others. But Tangled has a deep fan base and timeless appeal, so this adaptation might just weave its own magic.
