Deepika Padukone’s performance as Sumathi in Kalki 2898 AD is one of the most iconic performances by her. Her scenes were crucial to the film’s plot and showed her exceptional range, where every emotion is brought to life with stunning precision. The audience is left in awe of her performance as Sumathi, and the return of the actress in a potential sequel would be an eagerly awaited event.
On Deepika’s 39th birthday, the makers of Kalki 2898 AD shared a heartfelt message to celebrate their leading lady. They expressed deep gratitude for her incredible contribution to the film, sharing special behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot. The post also teased an exciting update, hinting that Deepika’s return to the sets for Kalki 2 is just around the corner.
Earlier reports stated that Deepika might not play her role in Kalki 2 because of giving birth to daughter Dua Singh Padukone to husband Ranveer Singh on September 8, 2024. A private function in Mumbai was hosted for the public as they showcased their newborn. During the event, Deepika stated she would raise her daughter exactly like she would have wanted her mother to raise her. That person remains most important in her life. It lead to speculations that she would slow down her career as an actress.
But a press release by the Kalki 2898 AD team does seem to kill those rumors by confirming her return for the sequel. In their birthday message, they wrote, “Wishing our Sum-80, the beautiful @deepikapadukone, a very happy birthday. You’ve truly brought magic to #Kalki2898AD. May your year be as amazing as you are!” The video included some interesting behind-the-scenes moments of Deepika’s work on the film while transforming into Sumathi. The video ended with a message that read, “See you on the sets very soon.”
Director Nag Ashwin also confirmed the significance of Deepika in the franchise. According to him, there would not be a Kalki without Deepika, for she is part of the script. Her memorable fire interval scene in Kalki 2898 AD was nothing less than the best scene and drew comparisons to Game of Thrones because of its intensity. It also marked the first time Deepika played a mother on-screen as well as she has been one in real life.
Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, has an ensemble cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani. Although details about Kalki 2 are yet to be announced, Deepika’s return as Sumathi has already set the bar high for the sequel.
