Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam director Sanjay Leela Bhansali added that he “tried to make Aishwarya Rai into Vyjayanthimala from Sangam.” Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who directed the first OTT series Heeramandi, will head Love and War, starring Vicky Kaushal, Alia Bhatt, and Ranbir Kapoor. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Bhansali refuted reports circulating that the movie is a “re-working” of the 1964 picture Sangam. When Bhansali asked the audience if they would like to hear the tale of Love and War, he teased them by saying they would “have to wait for it.”
Love and War: Remake or Original Inspiration from Sangam?
Bhansali responded, “Not at all,” when informed that some online users had claimed the movie was a “re-working of Raj Kapoor’s Sangam.” I have watched Sangam, and I adore it. Sangam is similar to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. I attempted to transform Aishwarya Rai into Sangam’s Vyjayanthimala. All my affection for Raj Kapoor notwithstanding, it’s not Sangam at all. A great man, a masterpiece from a great filmmaker, is never recreated. How can you recreate Pakeezah, Sangam, or Mughal-E-Azam? Heeramandi is my affection for Kamal Amrohi and an homage to Pakeezah.” He asked himself why he would redo Sangam as well.
Bhansali on War and Love
Regarding Love and War, Bhansali continued, “I’m really, really enthused about this movie. It’s a truly special movie, but not in the way you may expect. No more horses, no costumes, and no pillars. It’s current, it’s distinct. I’m having fun doing it, and the music is unusual. I have some amazing actors on my cast.I’ll take my time and make the film carefully because it’s challenging for me.”
Addressing Sangam
Raj Kapoor directed the love drama Sangam in 1964. In the key parts are Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, and Vyjayanthimala. The movie also starred Iftekhar, Raj Mehra, Nana Palsikar, Lalita Pawar, Achala Sachdev, and Hari Shivdasani. The narrative centers on Sundar (Raj), a pilot who returns from battle after being thought to be dead. Then, after falling in love with Radha (Vyjayanthimala), he marries her. He doesn’t know, though, that she intends to wed Gopal, his closest friend (Rajendra Kumar).
