We saw the much discussed movie The Sabarmati Report, which starred Raashii Khanna, Ridhi Dogra, and Vikrant Massey. Here is our evaluation of the Dheeraj Sarna-directed and Ektaa R. Kapoor-produced film, which is based on the Godhra train fire incident.
Concerning the Sabarmati Report
Since its premiere, The Sabarmati Report—which stars the beloved Vikrant Massey alongside well-known actors Ridhi Dogra and Raashii Khanna—has garnered a lot of attention, mostly because of the delicate subject matter it addresses. Online discussion was sparked by the release of its powerful trailer, which brought up a number of issues. The fundamental question is still whether the movie lives up to the promise made by its makers, even if producer Ektaa R. Kapoor and Vikrant Massey addressed concerns with appropriate comments. This is our analysis of the Dheeraj Sarna-directed movie about the Godhra train fire, which ignited India’s secularism.
Review of the film The Sabarmati Report: Storyline
The actual events surrounding the Sabarmati Express’s fire served as the basis for the Sabarmati Report. The train caught fire on the gloomy morning of February 27, 2002, killing fifty-nine persons. The majority of the passengers on the train were Hindus returning from a religious event in Ayodhya. Despite conflicting accounts and hypotheses of the horrific event, this Vikrant Massey film supports the conclusions of the Nanavati-Mehta Commission. Both the film and the material it is based on claim that innocent people were killed when a sizable Muslim crowd attacked the Sabarmati Express’s S-6 and S-7 coaches close to the Godhra train station. The mob threw stones at the coaches before setting the train on fire. Samar Kumar, a Hindi journalist entangled in newsroom politics, is the subject of the movie. “The media looks up to its owners before portraying the truth, but the world looks up to the media for the truth,” Vikrant’s character in the movie muses. He experiences a range of emotions as he sets out to discover the “sach jo media wale khake ke beth gaye,” even degenerating into an alcoholic like Kabir Singh. The story follows Samar as she fights to tell the country the truth about Godhra with the aid of a young journalist named Amrita Gill (played by Raashii Khanna). The main plot of the movie is around this search for the truth and the part played by a large media company in attempting to conceal it.
Review of the film The Sabarmati Report: Performances
It would be an understatement to say that Vikrant Massey is an excellent Hindi journalist. He once again accomplishes it with amazing grace, demonstrating his ability to fit in with his roles. This seasoned actor really excels as Samar Kumar after thrilling audiences as an IAS candidate in 12th Fail and giving a spine-tingling performance in Sector 36. As usual, his eyes speak louder than his words, even though his speech is powerful. As Manika, the head of a media company and a strong, no-nonsense employer, Ridhi Dogra is a natural fit. She has the perfect balance of fire, fierceness, and unreserved confidence to carry out the part. However, Raashii Khanna’s portrayal of Amrita is particularly noteworthy. She fully embodies the material by giving her character nuance and passion.
Review of The Sabarmati Report: Writing and Directing
These are the primary areas in which the movie falls short. Although the disclaimer makes it apparent that the film is based on the Nanavati report’s conclusions, it seems to make an excessive effort to “take the opposition’s view and crush it.” In its “report,” does it maintain objectivity or does it overtly promote a certain narrative? We will let the audience decide on these questions. The film, which switches between real-life footage and imagined events, feels choppy and fragmented even if director Dheeraj Sarna does a respectable job.
Review of The Sabarmati Report: Concluding Remarks
Massey recently stated in an interview, “Agar aap Godhra kaand ko kisi bhi Hindu ya Muslim ki ya kisi bhi religious ya ideological lense se dekh rahe hai, aapko sharam aani chahiye.” However, as a descendent of the 1992 Bombay riot victims and someone who grew up in an interfaith family, similar to our movie’s protagonist, I question whether the filmmakers were able to accomplish the same.
