Selena Gomez recently shared a heartfelt revelation about her health and plans for future motherhood. The 32-year-old singer and actress disclosed in an interview with Vanity Fair that she cannot carry her children due to various medical conditions. This has been an emotional journey for Gomez, who had envisioned becoming a mother by age 35.
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. I had to grieve that for a while,” she said. Her health battles began in 2015 when she was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the body’s organs and tissues. This led to a kidney transplant in 2017, with the transplant donated by her close friend Francia Raisa.
In addition to lupus, Gomez has faced challenges with anxiety, and depression, and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020. These physical and mental health conditions make pregnancy unsafe for her, as they pose significant risks to both her and a potential baby.
Despite the difficult news, Gomez remains hopeful about motherhood through alternative paths. She has expressed her openness to adoption and surrogacy, particularly since her mother, Mandy Teefey, was adopted. Reflecting on this, Gomez said, “I probably wouldn’t be here. I don’t know what her life would’ve been like. She and I are very thankful for how life played out.”
Although her journey to becoming a mother may be different from what she originally envisioned, Gomez remains optimistic. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she said.
Selena’s openness has resonated with many, bringing attention to the struggles that numerous women face with pregnancy due to medical complications. Her strength and resilience continue to inspire those on similar paths to parenthood.
