Vicky Kaushal is back as the Maratha lions are roaring back on screen! And dropped the teaser, and this time, donning the armor of the fierce Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, in the much-anticipated historical epic “Chhaava.” Of course, if one has been following up on his career, one would realize this is a man who isn’t new to intense roles from his breakout in Masaan to the patriotic fever of Uri: The Surgical Strike and heart-wrenching Raazi. Now, with the Chhaava teaser dropped on 19 August, Vicky is all set to add another powerhouse performance to his already incredible filmography. And believe us, this one’s going to be a game-changer.
The Big Bang opening sets it right literally. The scene is set by the banks of the river, where some brutal battle is unfolding. Next comes Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who makes an entrance riding a horse into the midst of battle, its armor shining in the sun. He tells through voiceover amidst all the chaos, “We address Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a lion; Chhaava we address as the lion’s child.” If not already hooked, his fierce look and intense dialogue delivery will surely drag you into the scene. This teaser is action-packed Vicky slashing enemies with a kind of intensity that only he brings to the screen.
But it’s not just Vicky killing it in this teaser. Akshaye Khanna has been jaw-droppingly transformed into the infamous Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Known for his sharp, clean-cut roles in films like Dil Chahta Hai and Section 375, Akshaye has completely disappeared into this dark, menacing character. Of course, there is only a glimpse of him in the teaser, but that is enough to make one do a double-take is that really Akshaye Khanna? The actor pushed his boundaries to a deep dive into the role of one of history’s most notorious rulers.
This starry cast addition comes in the form of Yesubai Bhonsale, Sambhaji Maharaj’s wife, played by the incredibly talented national crush Rashmika Mandanna. Vicky has already termed her “the only person who can make hearts in 56 ways” in several interviews. With all that positivity and sweetness left on set, the impression has been stamped, and we’re excited to see how that chemistry will turn out on screen.
The film will be helmed by Laxman Utekar, who is also the director of the pleasers like Mimi and Luka Chuppi. With Chhaava, he steps into completely unchartered territory fashioning a film that is not only historical drama but an epic in scope. And with A.R. Rahman composing the score, you know the music will be as grand as the visuals. Rahman’s compositions are surely going to take the film to a different level of entertainment by creating an audio-visual experience that will leave audiences spellbound.
Produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava is an ensemble cast that includes Suniel Shetty, Ashutosh Rana, and Divya Dutta.
